Hill Skills Training

Update @ September 18th 2020: The very recently announced “Plan for Living with COVID-19” declares that the country is at “Level 2” with “Special Restrictions in Dublin” and we face the possibility that Dublin will be designated as Level 3 later today with a possibility that some areas will be designated as Level 4. So it would appear that designations may change quickly over the coming months. Many people who undertake Mountain Skills Training do so to support their leisure activities, so for them it could not be categorised as “essential”.

For now we are maintaining our schedule of courses as set-out below. To enquire about bookings for any course please drop us a line at or call Milly at 086 2475280.

We will continue to monitor the situation in the coming weeks and if designation changes and/or other circumstances require it then we may have to defer/cancel courses to avoid endangering course participants, staff and the public.

Starting with map reading and feature recognition, leading on to estimation, timing, use of the compass and ending up with navigation in poor visibility and in the dark. Whether you are just starting out or you feel you need a refresher or an improver we can help.

Mountain Skills 1 (MS1) is the foundation training to enable you to make your way reliably in open countryside and on our hills. It includes map reading and navigation techniques as well as personal equipment, and some aspects of the upland environment.

MS1 courses have been scheduled for:
October 17th-18th 2020
November 21st-22nd 2020
February 13th-14th 2021
March 6th-7th 2021

Mountain Skills 2 (MS2) builds on the foundation skills covered on Mountain Skills 1. It covers using a compass along with the map, navigating at night and in poor visibility and moving safely over steep ground.  As MS2 involves navigation in poor visibility we schedule these courses in the darker months.

MS2 Courses have been scheduled for:
January 9th-10th 2021

If there is anything else you think we could do for you please just drop us a line at or call Milly at 086 2475280
