September 19th 2015: Started at Cronins Yard, walked in through Hags Glen, up via Heavenly Gates, down via Devil’s Ladder. Terriffic views, impressive landscape, great day. Gain for the route is 890 m but I took in at least 100 m more as, once at the top, I dropped down towards ascent from O’Shea’s Gulley to meet up with a group coming up that way, before returning to summit for descent via the ladder.

Distance: 10K    Duration: 6 hours    Height gain: 990 m    Max height: 1,044 m

July 11th 2015: Started walking 06:00. Rain started up around 10:00 and continued for the day. Wind became Strong as the morning progressed, rising to gale force approaching mid-day. I turned back at Cruach Bheag at 12:30 and headed down along Stroicín. Walkers were turned off the Big Gun shortly thereafter. A challenging and memorable day on the hills.

Route Summary: Tomies Mountain – Purple Mountain – Cnoc d’Tarbh – Cnoc na Bhráca – Cruach Bheag – Cnoc na Bhráca – Cnoc d’Trabh – Stroicín – Contour west to Cronins Yard.

Distance: 15K    Duration: 10 hours    Height gain: 1,630 m    Max height: 832 m

12 Bens, County Galway, September 9th 2014

September 9th 2014. Glencoaghan Horseshoe: Derryclare – Bencorr – Bencollaghduff – Benbreen – Bengower – Benlettery. Bright and sunny, very light winds. The descent from Bencollaghduff required some scrambling and back climbing. The descent from Benbreen via a steep scree slope required snow slope techniques. Superb views across the Connemara hills and on over to Mayo. Good practice for Italian alps next week.   Distance: 12K  Duration: 9 hours  Height gain: 1,470m   Max height: 715m

July 28th 2014. Led a group of walkers from UK with Tony Nation today. Hags Glen, Brother O’Sheas Gully, Beenkeeragh ridge,  Carauntoohil, Cnoc Toinne, Zig-Zags, walk out. Brilliant sunshine and a great group of people. The team at Cronin’s Yard looked after us well with tea and scones on our return. Great day.
